General Membership Meeting Minutes

San Francisco ASIS Chapter

31st Annual Seminar & Exhibits
May 29,2003

The Chapter’s annual seminar and exhibits was held at the San Jose Convention Center, Parkside Hall. The exhibit hall opened at 0800 and was filled with exhibitors displaying the most advanced techniques, equipment and manpower in the Security Industry. Simultaneously, three educational seminars were held across the hall.

The exhibit hall was closed at noon to begin the luncheon agenda. Chair Brad Minnis CPP greeted the members and guests and officially called the luncheon to order. Chair Minnis led the group in the Pledge of Allegiance. San Jose Police Department Chaplain Dave Brigden gave the Invocation.

Chair Minnis then introduced the head table. Scott Hewitt, CPP, committee chairman of the Member Professional Certification Board announced the additional week extension to sign-up for the CPP examination, identified the new ASIS certification programs and their importance.

A motion to waive all normal monthly Chapter business was approved. Region II Vice President Connie Vaughn presented Erland Pierson an ASIS award for his tireless effort to resurrect the Mount Diablo Chapter which closed last month.

Chair Minnis introduced committee chairman Doug Nunes, who also became the newest CPP in the chapter. Mr. Nunes identified Greg Heiney, who coordinated security coverage during the event; Fred Smith, Hitachi who coordinated the event’s arrangements; Carole Martins, and Darryl LeDoux, RFI who organized and spearheaded obtaining corporate sponsorship of the event.

After the conclusion of lunch, Bonnie Michelman, CPP, CHPA provided an insightful and stimulating discussion on Innovative and Creative Leadership. Ms. Michelmann is an outstanding speaker and brings twenty-two (22) years of experience into focus.

Ms. Michelman reviewed all phases and needs of leadership, adding that it’s important to “Just Do It” and become a leader. Numerous leadership models were identified from Reengineering Advanced Thinking, Staying Ahead of the Curve to being a Listener and Motivator. Good Leaders are noted to “want it” which allows for both internal and external growth. Another important factor in being a strong leader is balance, which allows for flexibility.

Ms. Michelman eloquently described the need for volunteer leaders within ASIS and challenged the audience to get involved. A certificate of appreciation was presented by Chair Minnis.

Chair Minnis recognized Steve Duell for his work as the Chapter Website coordinator. His direct efforts were responsible for the Chapter receiving ASIS’s Newsletter of the Year award - Group VI.

Next Chapter meeting is scheduled for June 19, 2003 at the Well Fargo Bank, San Francisco. A full breakfast will be served starting at 0800.

Respectfully Submitted,
Lawrence B. Reid,
