Topic: Information to Intellectual Property to Profit
Ms. Fine briefed the chapter on the need for and developing an Intellectual
asset management process. The main idea is to decrease asset loses and increase
value revenue. A direct line relationship exists from intellectual asset
security and increase in revenue.
Intellectual Asset Management (IAM) is a systematic approach for turning
information in intellectual property to profits. A business that manages its
intellectual assets throughout the whole enterprise will increase revenue. To
make this program successful, the security department must be involved
throughout implementation. In today’s world of out-sourcing work through
dedicated and non-dedicated contractors, it’s vitally important to maintain
control of the company confidential and proprietary information.
Ms. Fine reported that the IAM process is divided into the following four
sections.
Identify: Confidential Information; who has access to material (in-house,
contractors, etc.). Inventory information, product, business strategy,
marketing/sales, finance and human resources.
Protect: Determine what material is to be shared versus protected. . Conflict
of interest may be present with certain contractors. A new protection module
includes a new breed of employee, contractor, vendor and/or temporary employee.
Protect all forms of competitive information which can be hard copy, verbal,
electronic and access to information. Also, there may be times when
Co-competition exists, which makes protection of intellectual information a
must.
Create: Consider all sources, analyze commercial potential. Determine revenue
generating information to provide basis for application.
Strategy Protection:
Ingrain, Integrate, Facilitate and Apply.
Once the above is completed, determine IAM status, rate the company appetite,
convene allies and experts to develop and implement IAM strategy.
IAM allies can be Research and Development, Finance, Marketing, General
Counsel, Corporate Communication, Human Resource, Training and IT Security.
The IAM program is a value added by saving dollars and allowing companies to
increase revenue capability in making dollars.
Ms. Fine was presented with an ASIS Certificate of Appreciation.
Next Chapter meeting will be held with the Annual Seminar and
Exhibits on May 29, 2003 at the San Jose Convention Center/Parkside Hall.
Chair Minnis closed the meeting at 11:00 am.
A total of 47 members were in attendance, plus 2 guests.
Respectfully Submitted,
Lawrence B. Reid,
SFBA Chapter Secretary |
