Security equipment. Two identical bills (H.R. 2970 and S. 1581),
introduced by Rep. Jerry Weller (R-IL) and Sen. Frank Murkowski (R-AK),
respectively, would provide tax deductions to businesses that purchase
certain security devices. Companies could write off expenses incurred to
detect or prevent unlawful access to a facility, to prevent individuals from
unlawfully bringing hazardous materials onto a property, or to protect
occupants of the building. Security devices could include electronic access
control systems, biometric identification systems, CCTV, locks, computer
hardware and software to prevent Cyberterrorism, alarms, and other
components necessary to support these systems.
H.R. 2970 has four cosponsors and has been referred to the House
Committee on Ways and Means. S. 1581 has no cosponsors and has been referred
to the Senate Committee on Finance.
