The General Meeting of the San Francisco Bay Chapter of the American
Society for Industrial Security was called to order by Chapter Chair
Connie
Vaughn at 9:30 am.
Chair Vaughn welcomed the members and guests and “thanked” our host for
today’s meeting, Mervin Marty, Manager, Corporate Security, ALZA.
Chair Vaughn led the group in the Pledge of Allegiance and gave the
Invocation.
Chair Vaughn introduced Scott VerMeer, Chief of Police of Mountain View.
Chief VerMeer welcomed us to the city. He also extended an invitation to our
membership to participate in "Eight Ball". Eight Ball is a small group of
Law Enforcement and Private Security individuals in the Bay Area that meet
regularly to exchange information and discuss issues.
Chair Vaughn introduced the Officers of the Chapter for 2002 in addition
to herself, Vice-Chair, Brad Minnis, CPP; Treasurer,
Patrick Sharkey, CPP
and Secretary, Ken Fauth, CPP. Chair Vaughn then asked for Guests to stand
and be recognized.
Chair Vaughn asked the Secretary, Ken Fauth, CPP for a report. Ken
announced that the chapter’s activities for previous meetings could be found
on the Chapter Web Site (www.sfasis.org). The group accepted the minutes as
posted.
Chair Vaughn asked the Treasurer, Patrick Sharkey, CPP for a financial
report. Patrick stated that the full report for January 2002 was not
complete due to the change over in the Treasurers position and statements
have crossed in the mail. However, the unofficial state of the treasury as
of January 1, 2002 was $28,098.91, with income for the month being $20.00
and expenses of $4,505.82. The ending balance was $23,613.09 as of January
31, 2002. Once official information is received it will be posted on the
Chapter Web site (www.sfasis.org). The group accepted the report as stated.
OLD BUSINESS:
Patrick Sharkey, CPP, Executive Committee member overseeing the
Annual
Chapter Seminar & Exhibits shared some of the plans for the May 16 program.
The event will be held at the Parkside Hall, San Jose, CA.
NEW BUSINESS:
Vice-Chair Brad Minnis, CPP shared with the group the possibility that he
may be selected to serve on Congressman Mike Honda and Mayor
Ron Gonzales’
Blue Ribbon Task Force on Airport Security. If the selection occurs, Brad’s
intent is to solicit SFBA ASIS members to participate in a Focus Group to
drive the issues and recommendations to the Task Force.
Chair Vaughn called upon our host,
Mervin Marty, Manager, Corporate
Security, ALZA to introduce our speaker. Our speaker has performed many
assignments for Mervin at ALZA and Mervin was very happy with the results.
Our speakers for the meeting were William A. "Tony" Lavelle and
Michael Wantz of Detection Support Services of Sacramento, CA. The topic was
"Terrorism, Bombs and Bomb Threats".
Tony cover each area with an excellent overview as to the pertinent
issues, how to gain management support, what "Bomb Dogs" actually bring to
the scene, issues with public law enforcement and fire services in
conducting searches, issues about new "technology", and how and what to do
in obtaining legitimate dog handling services. At the end of the PowerPoint
presentation, Tony led in "Luka" (their black Lab) in a hunt for explosives
(test props). The presentation was well received and many stayed beyond the
meeting time to ask additional questions.
Next meeting is March 15, 2002 at Four Point Sheraton in Sunnyvale, CA at
11:00am. This will be the Annual Law Enforcement Appreciation Day.
Chair Vaughn closed the meeting at 11:10 am.
A total of 62 members and guests were in attendance.
Respectfully Submitted,
Ken Fauth, CPP
