The General Meeting of the San Francisco Bay Chapter of the American Society for Industrial Security was called to order by Chapter Chair Connie Vaughn at 9:30 am.

Chair Vaughn welcomed the members and guests to the First meeting of the new year and “thanked” our host for today’s meeting, Patrick Sharkey, CPP, Security Manager, Guidant.

Chair Vaughn led the group in the Pledge of Allegiance.

Chair Vaughn announced the passing of Chuck Jones. On Friday, January 11th, 2002, Mr. Chuck Jones, retired Pinkerton VP and long-term ASIS member, died of a massive heart attack. Chuck had a long and active career in security. In 1973, Chuck founded his own, ultimately very successful, Oregon-based private security firm which was purchased by Pinkerton. He served with Pinkerton as a Regional Manager, Director of Operations in North America, and Vice President of Pacific Northwest region. Chuck retired from Pinkerton in 1999 and joined Allied Security's team in 2000. Chuck supported Allied's Boise, Idaho, operation, managed the San Francisco District. Chuck left Allied in October 2001 to pursue other interests. Chuck was active in community D.A.R.E. and child fingerprinting Programs as well as ASIS. He was a member of the San Francisco Bay Area Chapter and past Chair of ASIS' Columbia River Chapter. We shall miss him. The “Words of Inspiration” were offered by Brad Minnis, CPP.

Chair Vaughn introduced the Officers of the Chapter for 2002 in addition to herself, Vice-Chair, Brad Minnis, CPP; Treasurer, Patrick Sharkey, CPP and Secretary, Ken Fauth, CPP. Chair Vaughn then asked for Guests to stand and be recognized.

Chair Vaughn asked the Secretary, Ken Fauth, CPP for a report. Ken announced that the chapter’s activities for previous meetings could be found on the Chapter Web Site (www.sfasis.org). The group accepted the minutes as posted.

Chair Vaughn asked the Treasurer, Patrick Sharkey, CPP for a financial report. Patrick stated that the full report for December 2001 was on the Chapter Web Site. The chapter balance as of December 1, 2001 was $32,774.02, with income for the month being $63.22 and expenses of $4,738.33. The ending balance was $28,098.91 as of December 31, 2001. Thus, beginning 2002 with $28,098.91 in the bank.

Chair Vaughn called on Dennis Haw, Audit Chair, for a committee report. Dennis reported that a review of the financial records for 2001had been completed by the Audit Committee. The records were all in order as stated and posted on the web site in reports.

OLD BUSINESS:

At this time in the meeting, 2001 Chapter Chair, Ron Sathre, CPP came forward to present awards to those who served during his tenure as Chair. Ron presented Patrick Sharkey, CPP with special glass "Chair's Award" for his distinguished service. Ron also presented "Certificates of Appreciation" to the following: Larry Reed for the Golf Tournament and Ed Loyd for Security Officer Appreciation Day event.

NEW BUSINESS:

Chair Vaughn announced the following appointments. The May Seminar would be co-chaired by Curtis Given, CPP; Carole Martins; Lee O'Banion, CPP under the leadership of the Treasurer Patrick Sharkey, CPP.

Chair Vaughn also announced that Kathy Goelkel would be the I.B. Hale Committee Chair.

Chair Vaughn called on Patrick Sharkey, CPP to introduce today’s speaker. Patrick introduced Mr. Bob Larson, Guidant VP Operations (Retired), who spoke to the group on “Application of Quality Improvement Concepts”. Mr. Larson had a PowerPoint slide presentation covering 6 major areas to consider: Some building blocks of a security system; Comments on culture and core values; Process assessment methodology; Reengineering concepts and application; Mistakes in pursuing customer loyalty; and Running "lean" opportunity and challenge. At the conclusion of the presentation, Mr. Larson responded to questions from the group. Chair Vaughn presented Mr. Larson with a Certificate of Appreciation and a gift from the local area.

Chair Vaughn read a short note from ASIS International President Steven C. Millwee, CPP to the membership.

Next meeting is February 21, 2002 at ALZA in Mountain View, CA at 9:00am. The topic is “Bomb Threats with mock bombs and bomb sniffing dogs”.

Chair Vaughn closed the meeting at 11:00 am.

A total of 39 members and guests were in attendance.
