If we plan it, they will come!

Who would have thought identity theft was such a hot topic? I had heard a couple speakers on the topic in the past eighteen months so I thought the membership could have been inundated with the information.

Was I wrong! I would bet a dollar this is the best attendance for a July meeting in over five years. Nearly 70 members and guests attended the meeting.

Thank you Patrick Sharkey CPP, who chased down the speaker, Sergeant Ron Gordon, Jeff Gurule', KLA-Tencor, who hosted the standing-room-only meeting, and all the members who attended!

Your participation is what makes your Chapter a success!

Sergeant Ron Gordon of Milpitas Police Department’s High Tech Crime Unit was energetic and informed. Unfortunately, he knows of this growing problem, identity theft, first hand. His identity was stolen, more than once. Hard to believe because 1) he is a cop, and 2) after the first time attempt at stealing his identity, he put all the right measures in place to prevent it from happening again.

The statistics are staggering. Incidents of identity theft have increased 1400% in the past five years. It is estimated 1400 people fall victim to this crime every day. One in three Americans will be a victim. Anyone, young or old, alive or dead, can be a victim.

Ron provided penal codes for the crimes, tips on how to prevent identity theft, what to do if your identity is stolen, and who to call to report the crime or receive more information.

Sergeant Gordon was such a wonderful speaker, we may consider having him speak again. He has another presentation he does on Workplace Violence.

I have been an active Chapter member for about 8 years. For as long as I can remember, we, various Council and Committee members, have discussed how to increase attendance and participation. I think we have struck on the right combination.

If there is one thing we, the executive council, have focused on this year, it is timely and educational topics. The results have been tremendous. There are people showing up at meetings that I have not seen in years.

SFASIS is once again a valued resource to our membership. We may have to start allowing more time for networking before the meetings to give members time to catch up with each other.

Your Executive Council focused on your needs and interests, listened to your concerns about meetings, resolved to do better, and did. You rewarded our efforts by showing up. Who could ask for more than that!

Well, I guess I can ask for more and will. We need volunteers for leadership positions for 2003. Let’s not rest on our laurels, let’s keep up the good work. Let’s really strive to not only be one of the biggest ASIS Chapters in the World, but to be one of the best at giving back to the membership.

The best way to get involved is to volunteer on line or contact an Executive Council member. Join us at our September Executive Council meeting. Any member can attend an Executive Council meeting. Brad, Ken, Patrick, and I have been keeping a bit of a low profile in order to stay focused. It has worked for 2002, but now is the time to plan for 2003 and we need your help.

See you in September.

Thank you,
Connie Vaughn

Fellow members of the San Francisco Bay Area Chapter:

Greetings to all and welcome to August! The months are flying by and your Executive Council is already thinking well ahead into next year. As some of you may have heard, Ken Fauth, CPP, who as the 2002 Chapter Secretary, has been keeping us all informed on what has been happening in the Chapter through his very thorough and concise minutes, has elected to pack his bags (and his furniture) to head for warmer territories. Ken will continue to perform in his current role until the end of the term in December, and for that, we are very appreciative. It is not an easy job, and Ken is always on time with all of his deliverables.

In addition, our Chapter Chair, Ms. Connie Vaughn, who has presided over what I would consider one of the best years for the Chapter, will also be leaving us at the end of the year to relocate to another position outside of the Bay Area. She has spent countless hours arranging for and coordinating some of the highest quality meetings and events, and we have experienced some of the best participation by members that we have seen in quite some time. I want to be the first to say how much I appreciate their dedication and service to the Chapter and the Society. They have both done excellent jobs for us and will be dearly missed here in the SF Bay Area. We hope they will continue to participate with us and visit us when they can.

At our Executive Council meeting earlier today, on the agenda prepared by Connie, were a number of forward looking issues, such as preparation for the nomination and election of the 2003 Chapter Officers and Committee Chair. I would like to take a few moments to explain the process and encourage your participation.

As outgoing Chapter Chair, Connie Vaughn is also the Chair of the Nominating Committee for 2003. We will be, very soon, soliciting members to volunteer their time to fill some of these positions. They include Chapter Secretary and Chapter Treasurer, both Executive Council Positions. Based on past Chapter practice, Patrick Sharkey CPP will move to Vice Chair and yours truly is slotted to assume responsibility as Chapter Chair.

Then we have our committees and committee chairs, and these are some very big shoes to fill. I will not name them all, but they are things like the Law Enforcement Appreciation Event (in which planning has already begun for the 2003 event), the Golf Tournament, and the Security Officer Appreciation Event. Plus others like Legislative Liaison, Membership Chair and Placement. I can go on and on, but you get the idea. We do a ton of stuff, besides having fun at places like the Annual Seminar and Exhibits, which by the way, had two or three chair people, besides all of the volunteers.

These are not jobs where you sit at meetings and that’s all you have to do, either. All of the council members and volunteers work very hard to bring quality programs to the membership and to support the ongoing security education and development of our members. Many put in very long hours, and their rewards have been in the increased participation and enthusiasm, which we are currently enjoying. Now we need to ensure that the trend continues.

We cannot do this, of course, without dedicated professionals who are willing to give up some of their valuable time in support of the profession and the association. When I was told that “volunteering” for the Executive Council meant a 4-year commitment, I have to tell you I was depressed. But I did it, because I needed the points to maintain my CPP certification. When I joined up though, I was committed to trying to make a difference and to improve the quality of the programs. Now, in my second year, I am very thrilled to be here, and to be participating in what I view to be a renewed sense of mission for the Chapter, and also a renewed energy, because everyone else around me feels the same way as I do. We have donated significantly to the Bay Area and the Country, through contributions to local charitable organizations, and post 9/11 to the September 11th fund. We were fortunate to have a Chapter member receive support for her CPP endeavors, have a CPP study group in progress, and we are a significant contributor to the ASIS Foundation. Our website has received awards, and consistently wins the Newsletter of the Year award.

We have BIG shoes to fill, thanks to those dedicated people who preceded us but we also have an incredible opportunity in the current world situation to make real contributions to the security of our companies and our communities. Plus we have the funds to back it up. None of this would be possible by ourselves, and of course, none of it will happen unless more of YOU take the time to make the difference.

I have been very impressed by the new faces I have seen get involved this year, and I am constantly encouraged by the number of emails and comments I see and hear from people who want to be more involved. The time is now to do just that – there is still much more to do and much more to become involved in. I have many ideas, and want to hear yours.

Please express your interest in becoming a leader and contributor to the Chapter and our members, and encourage your peers to become involved as well. There is a place in the Chapter for all who wish to participate, and as far as I am concerned, the more the merrier. The only criteria is that you have to be committed to making a difference, and not afraid to be involved. Persons who are interested or who would like to nominate someone, should send an email to chair@sfasis.org.

I look forward to seeing you at the 9th Annual Larry Marshall Golf Tournament next week at the Spring Valley Golf Course in Milpitas. I also look forward to working with you all in the very near future. As always, your feedback and comments are appreciated.

Sincerely,
Brad Minnis CPP

New Policies and Guidelines for ASIS Chapter Websites

Several years ago, a few brave and innovative ASIS Chapters began to turn to the Internet to provide their members with additional benefits from their ASIS association. Without any clear direction or supervision, these visionary Chapters created websites and then began to learn how to make them more helpful to themselves. Some Chapters took great care to analyze and prepare their websites, while a few other Chapters simply posted “freebie” webpages that lacked professionalism and did not reflect well on ASIS. These widely different approaches became a matter of concern and ASIS International decided that the time had come for ASIS websites to conform to a set of standards that denoted professionalism and which established content guidelines and security.

The 2002 ASIS International Chapter Internet Development Committee consists of Chairman Allan Wick CPP (Senior RVP Chapter Internet Development), Steve Duell (Webmaster for ASIS Chapters San Francisco Bay Area, Minnesota, and Columbia River), and Anthony J Rizzo. This taskforce reviewed current ASIS website best practices and then began putting together their report. Many of the best practices that were incorporated came from the San Francisco Bay Area Chapter website.

It was discovered that a well-developed Chapter website provided its local members with many benefits including:

  • Cost effective solutions that allowed Chapters to spend their money on bigger and better events
  • Offering members more valuable information than would otherwise have been possible
  • Secured ecommerce transactions
  • Instant information updates and security alerts
  • Improved Chapter and member collaboration
  • Shared website technologies and methods between Chapters
  • Coordination in conjunction with the Office of Homeland Security through the use of Homeland Security Advisory status updates displayed on local Chapter website homepages
  • Improved efficiency and increased productivity

The committee faced several challenges. One of the main goals was to find a way to allow Chapters to build websites that would reflect their local needs and personality while at the same time staying within guidelines that would be applied to all Chapter websites to ensure professionalism and security. Another important goal was to create documents that gave clear direction and purpose to both ASIS Chapters and to the webmasters that Chapters may wish to hire. Lastly, all of the documents needed to be written in such a way that allowed Chapters to create their own websites without forcing them to first become webmasters.

The documents that were created and which will be presented at the 2002 ASIS International Seminar and Exhibits are:

  1. Preliminary Chapter Website Analysis
Helps to determine whether or not a local website would help a Chapter’s current situation, which content would be most beneficial, and cost considerations.
  2. Planning & Preparation
A ten-point action plan that steps a Chapter through their website’s development process. Includes discussion and helpful advice.
  3. Choosing an ISP
General discussion of a wide range of issues to be considered when choosing website services including many security issues.
  4. Chapter Website Development Issues
This large document includes standards for Chapter website content, administration, security, development tools, and more. There are policies for most aspects of the actual development and maintenance of the website. Packed with answers for most situations.
  5. Suggested Website Content
Based on the best practices found in current Chapter websites, this is an extensive list of website features that Chapters may wish to incorporate into their websites.
  6. Sponsorship & Advertising on Chapter Websites
In keeping with IRS restrictions and our own code of ethics, this document clearly defines the acceptable methods of advertising and announcing sponsorship on Chapter websites.
  7. Chapter Website Security
This document deals with specific Chapter website security issues including public/member access, website administration, e-commerce, sensitive website content, website architecture, and more.
  8. Newsletters Via the Internet
Discussion of, and guidelines for, the three primary methods for distributing an online Chapter newsletter; HTML only, Microsoft Word documents as an email attachment, & Adobe PDF files either as a download or as an email attachment.
  9. Gauging Chapter Internet Success
Discussion on how to determine whether or not a Chapter website is serving the needs of its local members and some other methods of gauging the website’s success.
  10. Potential Website Developers
A short list of website developers and website hosting companies offering discounts to ASIS Chapters for development and hosting of their website.

Following the ASIS Senior Leadership meeting in June this year, it was decided that the committee had produced enough information to warrant establishing these documents as global standards and to actively promote this concept through the following methods:

  • A presentation at the pre-seminar Chapter Officers Training Session on September 9th, 2002 by Steve Duell and introduced by Allan Wick CPP.
  • A new Internet Development section to be added to the ASIS International Virtual Chapter website that includes all of the documents listed above.
Click for larger image. Click for larger image.
        Preview # 1         Preview # 2
(Close the extra browser window when you are finished looking.)
  • A booth in the ASIS International Exhibitions section of the annual seminar in Philadelphia, PA.
  • Several MS PowerPoint presentations that will be shown in the booth and included on a special CD-ROM.
  • A CD-ROM containing all of this information and the MS PowerPoint presentations to be presented to attendees of the Chapter Officers Training Session
  • Ten full-version copies of Microsoft FrontPage 2002 to be given away in drawings during the seminar (Donation from Microsoft arranged by Steve Duell)

Since the San Francisco Bay Area Chapter already has a great majority of the new website standards in place, it will be prominently featured in the ASIS International booth hosted by Steve Duell with assistance from Connie Vaughn (SFBA Chairman), Brad Minnis CPP (SFBA Vice Chair), Ken Fauth CPP (SFBA Secretary), Patrick Sharkey CPP (SFBA Treasurer), Allan Wick CPP, and if his schedule permits, Alex Dourov (SFBA Website Committee Chairman).

I would like to take a moment to tell you that it is an honor to serve as a member on this ASIS International committee and to represent the San Francisco Bay Area Chapter. The generous support and invaluable assistance from the officers of the SFBAC has been more fantastic than I could possibly have ever asked or hoped for. I fervently believe that ASIS International is evolving into its next logical phase of development and that the SFBA website will be remembered historically as the website that led the way.

For more than four years it has been my honor to serve as your webmaster and together we have continued the “maverick” reputation earned by the SFBAC. Our SFBA Chapter has a well known history for coming up with new ideas that have revolutionized our organization and very soon our website will join in with the likes of these previous innovations. I am very proud to be a part of this “maverick” reputation and I welcome your website suggestions and feedback.
