General Membership Meeting Minutes

San Francisco ASIS Chapter

General Meeting Minutes for the November 21, 2002 at Hitachi, 2000 Sierra Point Parkway, Brisbane, California

The General Meeting of the San Francisco Bay Chapter of ASIS International was called to order by Chapter Chair Connie Vaughn at 9:30 am.

Chair Vaughn greeted the members and guests and called the meeting to order. Chair Vaughn led the group in the Pledge of Allegiance. Patrick Sharkey, CPP, Chapter Treasurer gave the Invocation.

Chair Vaughn then thanked our host Fred Smith, Security Manager, Hitachi who formally welcomed the group and provided us information regarding our presence at the site.

Chair Vaughn asked for a motion to dispense with the reading of the previous meeting’s minutes as they are posted on the Chapter Web Site (www.sfasis.org). A motioned was made, seconded and passed.

Chair Vaughn asked the Treasurer, Patrick Sharkey, CPP for a financial report. Patrick stated that the balance as of October 1, 2002 was $24,201.05, with income for the month being $7797.06 and expenses of $11,977.62. The ending balance was $20,015.49 as of October 31, 2002. A copy of the report is posted on the Chapter Web site (www.sfasis.org).

Vice-Chair Brad Minnis, CPP, announced that the Next Meeting of the Chapter was scheduled for Thursday, December 12 at San Francisco International Airport Aviation Museum. Our Speaker is Ed Gomez, Director, Transportation Security for the Airport.

Chair Vaughn in accordance with the Society’s By-Laws, asked the Nominating & Election Committee Chair, Dennis Haw, CPP, to come forward and conduct the election for Chapter Officers for 2003. The following were previously nominated by the committee: Chair, Brad Minnis, CPP; Vice-Chair, Patrick Sharkey, CPP; Treasurer, Curtis Given, CPP, and Secretary, Larry Reid. Dennis Haw explained that in accordance with the Society’s By-Laws, the election process and the procedures for nominations from the floor. Denny Haw then proceeded to call for nominations for each office. Having received no additional nominations from the floor for any of the positions, Dennis Haw then proceeded to have a vote for each office. Each nominee received a majority of vote casts.

The following were declared Officer’s elect for the 2003 Year term:

  • Chair, Brad Minnis, CPP;
  • Vice-Chair, Patrick Sharkey, CPP;
  • Treasurer, Curtis Given, CPP; and
  • Secretary, Larry Reid.

Chair Vaughn asked for certain Standing Committees to report:

Brenda Knox, CPP, Chair for the ASIS Foundation
announced the availability of scholarships provided by the Jack Buckley Memorial Fund available to Chapter Members. The scholarships were available for members to attend professional workshops. Applications would be available at the December meeting.
Rudy DuBord III, CPP Chair for CPP Review
announced the CPP Review Course would be coming to San Francisco the first of next year. Vice-Chair Minnis, CPP, complimented Rudy in his efforts to make this happen. Rudy also announced a “Lifetime CPP” that would be recognized at the December meeting.
Kathy Goelkel
announced that the 2002 I.B. Hale Submission documents were prepared and ready to be forwarded on to Headquarters. The binders are each about 10 inches thick of material.
Dennis Haw, CPP,
announced that preparations were underway for the Annual Seminar and Exhibits to be held May 29, 2003 at the San Jose Convention Center again. The letter to exhibitors would be in the mail shortly.
Cindy Doyle, Membership Chair
announced that approximately 40 new folks had joined the Chapter this year and asked any new members to stand and be recognized.

Chair Vaughn also announced that the Annual Law Enforcement Appreciation Day was scheduled for March 20, 2003 St. Patrick’s Day. Art Lesser would be Chair for this event and could use some volunteers.

Secretary Fauth then introduced our speaker for the meeting, Jeanne Perkins, Earthquake Program Manager, Association of Bay Area Governments. Jeanne was speaking on “Road Closures in the Bay Area from the next Earthquake”.

Jeanne had a PowerPoint presentation showing the effects of quakes on both the Haywood Fault and the San Andres Fault. It appears that the number of roads out of service will be much greater in the next “Big One” as well as take longer to get them all back in operation. The airports and infrastructure (Water lines and telecommunications) will also be greatly affected. Liquid faction would be the primary cause. She brought handouts and invited members to attend some other presentations on fortifying homes against the effects of earthquakes.

Next Chapter event is the Annual Holiday Meeting to be held on December 12, 2002 at the San Francisco International Airport Aviation Museum. Inauguration of the Chapter Officers for 2003 will occur at this luncheon meeting.

Chair Vaughn closed the meeting at 11:00 am.

A total of 53 members were in attendance, including 5 guests.

Respectfully Submitted,
Ken Fauth, CPP
SFBA Chapter Secretary

How the CPP benefits me.

The CPP represents an established level of knowledge within the Security Industry. During the past two decades, I have seen the CPP become the standard measurement of professional development within the industry. As the Business World continues to develop an increasing awareness of the positive contributions and influence security professionals can offer to the workplace environment and financial controls, the CPP has grown in popularity as the corporate measurement of an individual's knowledge and expertise within the Security Industry.
Value of the CPP Professional Designation Representing Security Industry Knowledge and Expertise, Improved Financial Compensation Potential

Why should professionals pursue the CPP designation?

To improve their professional knowledge and expertise within the Security Industry while obtaining internationally accepted recognition that identifies their Professional Qualifications.

2002 CPP Review Recap

Its been a good year for the CPP program.  In the program's 25th year, several new SFBA members became CPPs and one long time member was bestowed lifetime CPP. After three years as committee chair, we finally put together an informal CPP study group.  I have built stronger bonds with old friends and made new ones as a result.  ASIS International has committed to bring the CPP review to the Bay Area next year and they even recognized one of our own by making him CPP of the Month.

As we enter into a new year, I would like to see an increase in the number of CPPs in our Chapter.  By promoting the CPP program, formalizing a CPP study group, and with the CPP Review coming to the SFBA in March, I am confident this will happen.  However, I cannot do it without the support of our membership.  I would encourage volunteerism of current CPPs by being speakers or serving as committee members.  It is a great way to earn valuable recertification credit while serving the membership.  We also welcome the challenge of promoting and preparing our members for two new certifications.

I wish to thank the 2002 officers for support of the program this past year and those who volunteered their time as speakers to our study group. I look forward to serving you in 2003.

Have a happy and safe holiday season.

Sincerely,
Rudolph A. DuBord III, CPP
SFBA CPP Committee Chairman

Getting Involved - Get Noticed

For the last four years, the SFBA Chapter has had a website that has been growing by leaps and bounds. Each year we have added additional website features that have invited our members to become more involved with ASIS and with our Chapter. In this issue, I will be reviewing some of the ways that you can contribute to our website and to share with your fellow Chapter members.

Share Your Success. In our Member Achievements area, you can share your professional achievements and accomplishments with the rest of our Chapter (and the whole Cyber-world).

Are you a CPP? Our CPP Member Profiles are modeled after those presented by ASIS International headquarters. Submit your own CPP Member Profile or update your existing one in our index of SFBA CPP members.

Feel like Writing? Our monthly Newsletter is for our members, so please don’t be shy about contributing to it. We welcome member contributed articles that follow the rule of Professional Conduct at Chapter Meetings and we encourage our Chapter Committees to submit their updates as newsletter articles.

Job Seeking? Visit the Placement section of our website. Submit your own or review the current job openings that SFBA Placement Chairman, John Suhr (who has been doing an excellent job of keeping track of security related job openings in our Chapter area for years) has available.

Got Something to Say? Our Speaker’s Bureau is a terrific opportunity to let others know that you are available for speaking engagements as well as being a great place to search for security speakers.

Got Anti-Terrorism? The Call To Duty special section of our website is entirely dedicated to anti-terrorism topics. From safety guidelines to security bulletins as well as Sept 11 photos and links to other antiterrorism websites, this section has become one of the most heavily “contributed to” sections of our website.

Want to Talk to Someone? Our Debriefing Room is a BBS style members-only chat room where you can post messages to your fellow Chapter members as well as read what others had to say.

Do you have My Number? Our members-only Chapter Membership Directory should be updated anytime that you change your contact information or attain an ASIS designation (CPP, PCI, PSP). An emailed confirmation will remind you to also update your records with our national headquarters.

These are just a few of the ways that you can use your SFBA Chapter website to become more involved and to be known as an “active” member. “Member contributions” are the heart and soul of ASIS and now is the time to get involved.
