Chairman's Corner

 August 2001

- Mr. Don Mills Brought The Emergency & Recovery To Us!

- ASIS President Ms. Bonnie Michaelman CPP Visits The Region

- Remember To Get Your Golf Clubs Out for 17 August

It appears our membership is interested in emergencies and ways to recover from them. Mr. Don Mills, Applied Materials, did an excellent job at our meeting last month as our guest speaker. Vice-Chair Connie Vaughn picked a winner when she identified him as a potential guest speaker earlier in the year.

Our attendance was up again as we had approximately 40 attendees at Applied Materials. A big “thanks” goes out to Jim McMahon for sharing his facilities with the Chapter for our July meeting.

This is the fifth time we’ve had one of our local corporations host the Chapter meeting. I think this system of donated meeting space, hosted food, early meeting time, networking time and excellent speakers have made the new program a success. And, we’re typically out before noon! This new format is going to work for us.

Don did an excellent job at taking us through a presentation he co-authored with Mike Dodge while at Adaptec Corporation. Don brought out many of the issues that we in the industry don’t always remember about emergencies and trying to prepare to recover from them. There is a lot of “grunt work” that needs to be done even after the formal “OK” is received from senior management. One thing we need to keep in mind is that if we don’t think of it, there probably won’t be anyone in the company who will. And, this is an excellent opportunity for the security department to fill a too often overlooked void that sometimes exists between EH&S and Security.

A little “jewel” Don shared with us worth remembering: 1,700 citizens are “covered” by just one firefighter! Now, when the next big disaster hits this region, how many firefighters do you think will come to assist you at your company? It pays to prepare….

Two of our former Chapter Chairs in attendance were: Lew Schatz CPP and John Suhr. In my monthly SFBA Chapter Longevity Recognition Award Program, we saw five good members be recognized for the first time this year. Thanks for coming guys & gals.

On Monday, 30 July 2001, I had the pleasure of attending Golden Gate Chapter's monthly meeting in Novato. Fellow ASIS SFBA chapter member Ken Fauth CPP drove to this special meeting with me. While we were the only “regular” SFBA members present, several in attendance “claimed” SFBA membership, which was just fine. The attendance was excellent at the new Stone Creek Country Club. In addition to me as the Chair, representing the SFBA Chapter, the Sacramento ASIS Chapter Chair Bill Bailey was there and the Monterey ASIS Chapter was also represented by its Vice-Chair. Our RVP Rob Williams and his ARVP Luis Morales attended their first multi-chapter event, and it was a pleasure to see another ASIS International Player join us, Ms. Shirley Pierini CPP.

Golden Gate Chapter Chair Jack Clark orchestrated a very informative and much appreciated luncheon with our ASIS President Bonnie Michaelman CPP as the guest speaker. Bonnie briefed us about the current and future orientation the Association has planned. The future will be fun and exciting! Come to San Antonio in October and see for yourself.

Remember 17 August for our Annual Larry Marshall Memorial Golf Tournament at the Sunol Country Club. Vice-Chair Connie Vaughn and Larry Reid (you may remember Larry from his work with the May Seminar) have put together a tremendous program. Come share in the fun!

If you’re looking for something special to take your spouse, put Saturday, 22 September on your calendar as we celebrate the 45th Anniversary of the San Francisco Bay Area Chapter.

By now, you should have received a letter from our Treasurer Brad Minnis regarding Chapter dues. He has really made it easy for you to help support the chapter with a very small donation. Please take advantage of this opportunity as we also wish to use this means of communication to update our FAX and email addresses. Brad is looking forward to hearing from each of you.

For those interested in Chapter Officer positions, soon the Nomination Committee will be established for the selection of the appropriate positions that will become available next year. If you think you’d like to make a little (four year) commitment to the Chapter, please contact me ASAP. Also, those of you interested in other positions within the Chapter, please don’t wait to be called/contacted. With over 700 members, you can imagine what it would be like to have to contact every member to determine his/her interest in being a Chapter Officer, a Committee Chairman or a committee member. Share your talents with the Chapter today and get involved. Believe it or not, the short 12 months goes by very quickly. Your Chapter needs you, so contact me today!
