An Army of One; St. Patrick's Day Is A Success!!!

Once again it is my pleasure to report another successful ASIS SFBA monthly meeting!

Recently we've heard the new US Army recruiting slogan, "an army of one." Being a US Army veteran, I personally don't think that's how one wins a war. I had an opportunity to see what "a committee of one" could do by pulling together our St. Pat's Luncheon after two committee chairs declined to follow through with their assignments. Learning from other potential volunteers they had no time to "babysit" this responsibility or they were not available/interested, I personally (with additional assistance from my family) took on the task and substantially did what an entire committee of about 20 (with the noted exceptions identified below) or so people did in past years.

Now I don't mention the details of this experience for any personal gain or recognition. In volunteer organizations there isn't any gain and little recognition. When one is the Chairman, the responsibility falls on his/her shoulders to make sure the program/schedule is met. I know any other Chairman faced with the same challenges would have done the same thing. I encourage everyone to volunteer to become a Chapter Officer or at least a committee member, and really get to see how little it takes to keep this worthy cause moving forward, if everyone contributes.

After spending approximately 40 hours on just this event and giving up part of my consulting income to full fill my ASIS SFBA Chapter Chair responsibilities, I must believe anyone telling me they don't have time is really telling me they don't care.

Do you care? If you truly care and are interested in helping this Chapter grow, and continue to be a leader within ASIS, I hope my experience will convince you that you really do have time. Even an hour a week, or an hour a month can make a positive impact on the success of this Chapter! May I count on you? Call me right now and tell me what you'd like to do.

Last month's 38th Annual St. Patrick's Day Law Enforcement Appreciation Day Luncheon was the place to be on 17 March. While the overall numbers were down, those in attendance enjoyed themselves with plenty of time to network, see a leprechaun, enjoy a wonderful Irish lunch, and hear a great speaker.

For the first time, we saw the vast majority of our registrants come through our website (www.sfasis.org). I think this adds credence to the fact we're turning more and more to the Internet for many things in our lives, and that the members are utilizing our online newsletter more of the time.

If you were one of the first 100 attendees at our St. Pat's Day Luncheon you received a special spring-loaded frog. Not only were they green, but the were also an excellent stress relieving device! They seemed to be a really bit hit. How is your frog jumping?

Mr. David J. Gibbs CPP, our 1984 SFBA Chapter Chairman, was quite the gentleman as he did an excellent job of being our Master of Ceremonies. Dave was a pro all the way, even when, because most of the audience didn't hear the details, one of his Irish jokes didn't quite get off the ground. You are a good man to have on the team Dave and I thank you.

Another first at this year's St. Pat's Day Luncheon was the invocation offered by our very own Chapter Chaplain Gary Sepulveda CPP. It was a most heartfelt and warm invocation. We are honored to have Gary as our Chaplain.

We had a record 12 CPP's register for our St. Patrick's Day Luncheon: Ci Cardelli CPP; Wayne Dexter CPP; David Gibbs CPP; Denny Haw CPP; Scott Jenkins CPP; Darryl LeDoux CPP; myself, Ron Sathre CPP; Lew Schatz CPP: Gary Sepulveda CPP, Jim Serrano CPP; Patrick Sharkey CPP; and Brad Wilson CPP. That puts us above the10% mark of our nearly 100 CPP's in the Chapter. Let's keep the momentum going!

Some of our members in attendance were also former Chapter Chairs: Denny Haw CPP, 1981; David Gibbs CPP, 1984; Paul Dubois, 1987; Darryl LeDoux CPP, 1991; John Suhr, 1992; Ted Barron, 1994; Bob Denny, 1995; Brad Wilson CPP, 1997; Lew Schatz CPP, 1998; and Kathy Goelkel, 2000. This is a record for any meeting this year!

In my monthly SFBA Chapter Longevity Recognition Award Program, an autographed baseball from our guest speaker Mr. Jay Johnstone was given to: Ci Cardelli CPP; Wayne Dexter CPP; David Gibbs CPP; Chuck Jones; Darryl LeDoux CPP; Ed Loyd; Ron Sathre CPP; and Gary Sepulveda CPP

Our guest speaker Mr. Jay Johnstone shared several of his amazing personal baseball experiences with us. Mr. Johnstone was a former player from the Yankees, A's, Angels, Dodgers, Phillies and Cubs. He had three World Series appearances, including two titles. He encouraged everyone to learn what he/she does best and make that his/her focus in life. He was well received by our attendees.

I'd like to recognize the following sponsors for their support this year: Gold, Connie Vaughn, Allied Security; Silver, Jim Cawood CPP, Factor One; Silver, Paul Dubois, Tomasi Dubois and Associates; Bronze, George Keefe, ALL-GUARD Systems, Inc.; Bronze, Bob Jensen, Guardsmark; Bronze, Dan Wachtler, IPSA International; Bronze, Kris Rennett, Pinkerton; Bronze, Brad Wilson CPP, RFI Communications and Security Systems. Since I probably put in more through my labor than anyone did through cash, and even though it was not recognized on the sponsorship board or in the program, I guess I can recognize my own business as a sponsor being an Independent Associate of Pre-Paid Legal Services®, Inc.

A couple of people who also need to be recognized for their assistance in making this event possible were Kendra Pollack who collected the reservations and assisted with the badging; Connie Vaughn who assisted with the badging, Beth Cala from AnyEvent, Ursula Floyd, from the Four Points by Sheraton (formerly the Sunnyvale Hilton), and John Suhr for taking a bunch of photographs and helping set up.

Events/Notices:

In a surprise change, Ms. Kris Rennett now has Mr. James Gordon, Sr., Managing Director of Pinkerton Consulting & Investigations, replacing Mr. Ray O'Hara CPP as the primary speaker. Mr. Gordon will speak on Managing Global Product Protection and Brand Integrity. You'll want to be there for this one!

17 May Annual May Seminar & Exhibits - Committee Chair Patrick Sharkey CPP and his committee have been working hard to put together a top flight program for us this year. Now is the time to register (www.sfasis.org), especially for our CPP's towards earning those CPP re-certification points.

21 June at AMD - I am anticipating that Mr. Pete Costner CPP, Director Global Security, AMD, will be our guest speaker for June at his AMD facility.

Is your company going to be the most "represented" throughout the year at our ASIS meetings? Soon you'll see the monthly tallies and the winners will become vary apparent! Come make your mark this month.
