Chairman's Corner

 March 2001

Two For Two!  Now Get Ready For St. Patrick’s Day!

It is a pleasure to report that our second ASIS SFBA monthly meeting of the New Year with our new format was another success!  The earlier schedule combined with our top quality speakers, their subjects and the excellent first-rate facilities have all given our meetings a new breath of life not experienced in a very long time!

I want to congratulate Ms. Connie Vaughn, Vice-Chair, for accepting the opportunity to be the first of our new officer corps to receive OJT in conducting the monthly meeting.  Even though it is a little different than talking to a small group of four or five, Connie did a great job.

Mr. Jim Serrano CPP, Security Manager, Novell Corporation, hosted the February gathering, which was coordinated by Ms. Connie Vaughn, Vice-ChairMr. Chuck Welch, Manager of Network Security, Novell Corporation, shared some of the “secret sauce” with our 37 attendees.  See elsewhere in the newsletter the article “February Edition:  “Why Did You Come To Today’s ASIS Meeting?”  Once again, the majority of those who came to our meeting did so because of the topic being presented.  If you missed Mike’s presentation, you missed a good deal of current information about how best to secure your network.  I extend our appreciation to Jim and Mike for their support of the Chapter.

Our February meeting also saw at least nine CPP’s in attendance:  Ken Fauth CPP; Denny Haw CPP; Darryl LeDoux, CPP; Brad Minnis CPP; myself, Ron Sathre CPP; Lew Schatz CPP: Jim Serrano CPP; Patrick Sharkey CPP; and Brad Wilson CPP.  That puts us at about the 10% mark of our nearly 100 CPP’s in the Chapter.  I hope more will attend our meetings in the coming months.

Some of our members in attendance were also former Chapter Chairs:  Denny Haw CPP, 1981; Darryl LeDoux CPP, 1991; John Suhr, 1992; Bob Denny, 1995; Brad Wilson CPP, 1997; Lew Schatz CPP, 1998; and Kathy Goelkel, 2000.  I think this is a record of recent times!

Denny Haw CPP, Chairman 2000 Budge & Finance Committee reported that his audit of the chapter’s books revealed we finished the year with $47,788.60 in the bank, or $13,069.22 more than we started with twelve months before.  We owe Kathy Goelkel a big “thank you” as the “…chapter books were managed in an efficient manner.”

This month’s 38th Annual St. Patrick’s Day Law Enforcement Appreciation Day Luncheon is going to be another special event.  If not already, you’ll want to register today through our website (www.sfasis.org).  Remember to bring your law enforcement contacts and use this opportunity to say “thanks” for their excellent service throughout the past year.  Oh yes, remember to wear green!

You’ll be excited to know that our guest speaker is Mr. Jay Johnstone.  Mr. Johnstone, who is being flown in from out of town, is a former player from the Yankees, A’s, Angels, Dodgers, Phillies and Cubs.  He was known for his clutch hitting and outrageous antics.  Mr. Johnstone made three World Series appearances with the A’s, Yankees and Dodgers, including titles with the ’78 Yankees and ’81 Dodgers.  Former “Rookie of the Year,” he has written three humorous sports books and has served as a broadcaster since his retirement.  He is definitely someone you’ll want to see in person!

Another special person will also be with us as our Master of Ceremonies!  Mr. David J. Gibbs CPP, our 1984 SFBA Chapter Chairman, has graciously consented to conduct our St. Patrick’s Day activities.  Dave is a pro and I am very happy to have his talent and expertise with us during this special Chapter activity.

38th Annual St. Patrick’s Day Luncheon  -  Put Friday, 16 March 2001 on your calendar for the 38th Annual ASIS SFBA St. Patrick’s Law Enforcement Appreciation Day Luncheon.  Just like last year, we’ll be at the Four Points by Sheraton (formerly the Sunnyvale Hilton) for another great event.  Register today, and bring a friend!

19 April at Agilent Technologies  -  Mr. Gary Sepulveda CPP will be our host for the April meeting at Agilent Technologies in Santa Clara.  Ms. Kris Rennett has rounded up Mr. Ray O’Hara CPP, Work Place Violence Expert, and Consulting & Investigative Division of Pinkerton, as our speaker in April.  Put this one on your calendar today.

17 May Annual May Seminar & Exhibits  -  Committee Chair Patrick Sharkey CPP and his committee have been working hard to put together a top flight program for us this year.  Now is the time to register (www.sfasis.org), especially for our CPP’s to earn those CPP re-certification points.

21 June at AMD  -  We’ve got a tentative confirmation from Mr. Mark Tyrrell, Security Manager, AMD, to be the host for our June meeting.  A special thanks also goes to one of our long-time SFBA members Mr. Pete Costner CPP, Director Global Security, AMD, for lending his support to the chapter.

10% Membership Increase  -  Some of our goals for the year include a 10% increase in chapter membership.  At just over 700 members, we only need to find 70 or so new ASIS members to meet this very reasonable goal.  We encourage each of you to share with your friends and associates the excellent benefits of being an ASIS member.  Help us meet our goal by mid-year!  If you have any ideas to increase our membership or can encourage a good number of memberships, please contact Ms. Cindy Doyle at cdoyle@hirschelectronics.com or (650) 298-8056.  Cindy loves to pass out those new member certificates.

Need A Job?  -  I understand that there are dozens of responsible security positions open in our area.  Many are listed in our Placement Committee section.  However, let’s get those “missing” positions into our arena where we can help get them filled with ASIS members.  If you know of an open position contact our Placement Committee Chair Mr. John Suhr at  jwsuhr@aol.com or (408) 945-9756.

45th  SFBA Chapter Anniversary  -  The chapter was chartered on 24 September 1956.  We will continue to celebrate the 45th anniversary of the chapter at each of our monthly meetings.  In a special way, we’ll recognize those who formed the foundation for what we’ve gotten to know and appreciate so well today as the SFBA of ASIS.  During the business meeting, the five SFBA members with the “oldest” ASIS membership numbers will be recognized with special “thank you” prizes.

Who was recognized in February’s meeting?  They were:  Ken Fauth CPP, ’68; Denny Haw CPP ’73; Lew Schatz CPP ’83; John Suhr '85 (?); and Bob Denny ’74.  See their photo elsewhere in the newsletter.  We’re going to recognize 10 ASIS SFBA members during St. Patrick’s Day’s Luncheon.  Will you be one of them?

Most Meetings Recognition  -  Are you going to be the SFBA member (non-committee and officer member) that attended the most meetings during the year?  Is your company going to be the most “represented” throughout the year at our ASIS meetings?  I can promise you that persons who qualify for the “Chairman’s Award” and the “Committee Chairman of the Year” will be very impressed at the “thank you” gifts they will receive next December.  Don’t be surprised if you see some “goodies” dropped on currently participating chapter members…stay tuned!

Need Key Committee Volunteers  -  If you have always wanted to be on a committee that was critical to the success of something great, then we need you!  Contact me, or the other officers, immediately to help us identify serious members who want to make a small contribution of time to this great chapter.  Remember, CPP points are given for these assignments, so start “collecting” them today.

Speakers & Press Bureau  -  To help us spread our ASIS wings of knowledge in the San Francisco Bay Area, I am initiating a Speakers & Press Bureau.  The purpose of the bureau will be to offer our experienced ASIS members the opportunity to fill speaking engagements in the area, and to be a resource for security and business continuity related issues to the news media.  If you’d like to be considered as a speaker and/or a security oriented spokesperson, please send me a letter of introduction and biography today.  Of course, CPP members will be considered first.
