Recent Changes in
CPP Eligibility and Recertification

There have been some recent changes in both the eligibility requirements and recertification for the CPP program, which can be somewhat confusing. Therefore I have summarized information for both the future CPP and the professional that must re-certify.

Beginning this year, an endorser signature by a CPP is no longer required. Instead, the applicant must now sign an application declaration. Also, the approved applicant must answer three conviction/disciplinary questions and eighteen demographic questions at the time of exam.

Eligibility requirements change in 2001 which may affect some professionals. If security experience is used strictly for eligibility, nine years of security experience, three of which must be in responsible charge vs. two years currently. For those using a combination of education and experience, an Associate's degree will no longer be recognized as part of the eligibility requirements. A Bachelor's degree and seven years of security experience, three of which must have been in responsible charge, will be required vs. Bachelor's degree and five years experience, two in responsible charge currently. There are no additional provisions for a degree beyond a Bachelor's degree.

Effective July 1, 2000, Sylvan Prometric, a division of Sylvan Learning Systems, will be administering all US and Canada based tests instead of ASI. Qualified candidates can call 1(800) 699-4975 after June 15, 2000 to schedule a convenient time. Testing centers are located in several Bay Area locations including Fremont, San Jose (2), San Francisco (2), and Walnut Creek. If anyone wishes to test in June, you must have been approved by May 24th and made reservations before May 31st, as ASI will continue to administer tests until June 30, 2000.

Several changes have been made regarding recertification. Sixteen recertification credits must now be obtained within a three-year period vs. nine credits currently. Though the additional credits may seem imposing, the point values have been greatly increased for many of the activities. Some activity credits have more than tripled. Also, credits for membership in non-profit business associations, attendance at a chartered security organization's annual seminar of three plus days, as well as public service have been added. If you are slated to re-certify in 2001, I would recommend submitting your credit reporting form for evaluating your credits obtained to date, to be certain that you are on track for recertification.
