Workplace Investigations/Chief William Lansdowne
Workplace Investigations
Using a real case history, Cotran v. Rollins Hudig Hall International: Good Faith
Belief of Misconduct Adequate To Support Termination, we learned many lessons for
employers.
- Determine the goal of your investigation.
- Review your company investigation policies.
- Conduct the investigation promptly.
- Gather the information from all sides.
- Learn who to interview and when to prepare a report.
- Recognize when a workplace investigation should be conducted.
The presenters then focused on working with attorneys and local authorities.
Tyler and Justine used state of the art technology to present the workshop and were very
well informed. Many members asked a lot of good questions from which we all
benefited. You should have been there.
Luncheon Speaker Chief William Lansdowne
San Jose's Police Chief gave us a very enthusiastic presentation about his
expectations for the South Bay City he said is "about to explode". He
promptly corrected "explode" to "the most rapid growth in Northern
California" because a police chief shouldn't use the word "explode".
William told us about his plans and visions for the San Jose Police Department. The
goal is to move out into the communities to talk with business people and CEO's to find
out what the community wants from their police force. The plan is to create
work-stations in the community with just a half dozen police officers forming a work
outlet. The stations located in the community and shopping centers would allow
police officers to work with people in the community. William referred to these
officers a "community police". The officers would make house calls to
obtain feedback in order to understand the needs of the people.
Chief Lansdowne also told us why when he was 16, he decided to become a police officer.
A caring police officer that took him under his wing and befriended him was his
role model for the ideal police officer. This police officer had a profound effect
on William and influenced his vision for a caring and understanding police force.
